You don’t get much of this from the game itself. That’s what the plot outline says on Lumencraft‘s Steam page, anyway. Here, they venture through the darkness in search of Lumen, a newly discovered mineral that may hold the key to humanity’s salvation. That’s because the surface of our blue planet has turned an uninhabitable fiery red, and the scattered remnants of civilisation have been forced to establish a new life underground. Or more specifically, the game is set underneath Earth in the year 2221. The game is set on Earth in the year 2221. Although the game may not look particularly special, it feels satisfying to play, especially when it comes to what is probably Lumencraft‘s lead mechanic – drilling. But there are nuggets of gold within its great brown seam of unremarkable back-of-the-box features. You’d be forgiven for writing Lumencraft off as grist for Steam‘s Early Access mill. It doesn’t have proper crafting in it either, making the choice of title somewhat odd. It’s like Factorio without the factories, or They Are Billions without the billions. It’s a survival affair that combines mining resources with building structures and fending off waves of enemies, but beyond that there isn’t much of a hook. Even with a hard stare, you might be pushed to spot much that’s distinctive about it. Lumencraft is not the most exciting Early Access project at first glance.
